We
all know the adage, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."
But what is it about apples, like JAZZ™, that makes them
so healthy for us?
FIBER FORTIFIED
An average apple contains five grams of fiber, or 20% of the U.S.
recommended daily allowance. Fiber aids digestion and, when combined
with high natural juice content and complex carbohydrates, helps
us feel satiated longer. Apples are also free of fat, cholesterol
and sodium, are low in calories, and contain vital phytonutrients
and antioxidants.
CANCER FIGHTER
Recent studies have linked apples to cancer prevention. A flavonoid
known as quercetin that is found in apples was discovered to help
prevent prostate cancer cell growth by the Mayo Clinic in 2001.
And phytochemicals occurring naturally in the skin of apples was
found by Cornell University to reduce colon cancer cell growth
by 43 percent. Flavonoids found in fresh produce have also been
found to cut the risk of developing lung cancer by 50 percent,
as reported by the National Cancer Institute in 2000.
BREATHE EASIER
Compelling new research suggests that the children
of moms who regularly ate apples during pregnancy may have a reduced
risk of developing asthma. Published in Thorax online in 2007,
the longitudinal study tracked the foods eaten by 2,000 pregnant
women and then examined the effects of the maternal diet on airway
development in their children five years later. Researchers concluded
that the children of mothers who ate apples had a significantly
reduced incidence of childhood asthma and wheezing. View

TRY 3 A DAY
To get the maximum health benefit from apples, nutritionists recommend
eating at least one a day. But if you're looking to shed a few
pounds, a simple diet suggests eating three apples a day, or one
before each meal. By using the 3-Apple-a-Day
plan, people lose an average of 20 lbs in 12 weeks.
